New wardrobe? Check.

New roommate? Um, check.

New decor for your dorm room? Let’s go shopping.

While your room will probably be furnished with the basics–bed, desk, chair, dresser–you still want to dress up your dorm in your own personal style. Otherwise, your new abode will seem like it belongs in a subdivision filled with houses that look. like. every. other. house. on. the. block. Snooze.

Some easy, affordable basics will set your room apart from the crowd. (I should know; back in the day, my roommate and I plastered our walls floor to ceiling with photos, posters, and cutouts from magazines. We also put our dresser smack in the center of the room, and hung beads from both our doorways. People used to stop by just to see if the rumors about our room were true.)

1. Soft, colorful bedding. A duvet with a bright cover is perfect; toss and shake the duvet, and voila! Your bed’s instantly made. Also think about buying an extra set of extra-long sheets, for those weeks when you just can’t make it to the laundry room.

2. A comfy reading chair (ie, not the same lumpy wooden behemoth that sits at your desk), preferably with storage in its base. This will make your back happy, especially when it’s movie or XBox night.

3. A strong lamp, and its corollary, a clip-on book light. The former will help you stay awake in cram-time situations; the latter will let your roommate sleep when you’re, well, still finishing up tomorrow’s reading at 4 am.

4. Bins for organizing your Post-its, highlighters, socks, and shot glasses. Keeping everything in its place will save time and sanity.

5. Something funny. Could be a poster or a sign; could be a clock. Think of it as an instant icebreaker.

You’re in. You’re excited. And you’re looking at a closet full of Victoria’s Secret Pink sweatpants/white tank tops (ladies), or Abercrombie cargo shorts/Old Navy ringer tees (gents), thinking they’re not exactly going to make you best-dressed on campus.

What’s a broke, almost-college student to do?

First: don’t panic. If you start now, you have over 4 months to assemble a better wardrobe. Second: ask everyone who might give you a graduation present to give you a card with some cash stuffed inside. You’re gonna need it. Third: ask a friend with a savvy fashion eye to evaluate your current closet. Everything that’s ripped (at least unintentionally), stretched, stained, or smelly needs to go in the trash or workout pile, depending on how (un)wearable it is.

Once you’ve got your closet pared down to the usable stuff, it’s time to consider what sort of look you’re going for. Are you a yoga-and-sweats girl who’d like to transition to a more boho look? Or are you a guy exhausted by your polo-and-jeans uniform, wanting a more personalized persona? If you’ve spent years cultivating your style and you’re happy with the image you project, your job is even easier: all you need to do is upgrade your basics. But if you’re ready for a total overhaul, to finally project the look that the costume designer has created for the film about your college life, the summer before you leave for school might be a good time to research and experiment before plunking down the cash for your new look.

Regardless of what look you choose, you’re going to need some good basics: CollegeFashion.net has compiled a great checklist that will help you assemble the jeans, t-shirts, shoes, and other essentials that you can build your new wardrobe around.

Now all you have to worry about is how you’ll decorate your dorm room.

(Never fear; we’ll address that in our next post.)
